    Eleven centuries of history

Built in 987, under the King of the Franks, Hugues Capet, the Château d’Ermenonville was initially a fortress regulating traffic between the medieval town of Senlis and the eastern markets. Burnt down during the Great Jacquerie peasant revolt of 1358, then rebuilt, the château hosted the royal visits of Louis XI and later Henri IV, at a time when it belonged to the latter’s comrade-in-arms, Vice Admiral Dominique de Vic. It was not until 1728, when it was acquired by Lord Claude-Louis Lombard, that it became an elegant country residence.

In 1763, the Marquis René-Louis de Girardin instigated a major programme of interior design and landscaping. Inspired by Rousseau’s epistolary love story ‘Julie or the New Heloise’, he created one of the most beautiful English-style parks of the 18th century, attracting a host of illustrious visitors including Marie-Antoinette, Benjamin Franklin, Robespierre, Mirabeau, Danton, Saint-Just, Camille Desmoulins and Sweden’s King Gustav III.

The final home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Château d’Ermenonville continued to write its history under the ownership of Polish Prince Constantin Radziwill, then the automobile designer and manufacturer Ettore Bugatti, before becoming a prestigious hotel and film set for the French comedy film, Les Visiteurs parts 1 and 2. A member of the Terres de Natures label since 2022, Château d’Ermenonville now offers all the wonder of a vibrant estate in the heart of a natural unspoilt setting.
